The Rupununi is a vast area of grasslands with sparse trees, a few villages, termite mounds, gallery forest on the river banks and forested mountains in the southwest of the country. The savannah is divided into North and South Rupununi by the Kanuku Mountains and scattered with occasional Amerindian villages and few large cattle ranches. Every year the rains flood the savannahs and in many cases it is only possible to move about by boat.

Giant AnteaterThe Rupununi is an area rich in wildlife - you can spot Black Caiman sunning themselves in the river bank, Giant River Otters playing in the waters and Arapaima turning in the ponds. Bird life is particularly rich in the forest galleries and ponds. The rainforest and mountains provide a refuge for the endangered Harpy Eagle.
